To all club members.

It has recently come to my attention that Kath Bates will shortly be moving from her home in Llandegfan to live in Chesterfield Derbyshire.

Sadly last year, as we all know, Kath’s husband Eric passed away.

But as many of the members will be aware Kath and Eric had been active playing members of the Beaumaris Bowling Club for a number of years, playing together in the North Wales Coast League, the Veterans League as well as the Monday and Wednesday Night Leagues. They indeed were the exception to the norm in this modern era of sport, in that it was not very often that a husband and wife could be found harmoniously playing together in the same team. There were at times when matrimonial harmony became a little tense (and I mean that in the nicest possible way), but of course as with all loving couples they always managed to kiss and make up after the match.

My first recollection of Eric and Kath was at the inaugural playing of the Tom Towart Memorial Cup Competition at the Benllech Bowling Club. Very little was known of them in those days, but Eric astounded many of the bowlers present by becoming the first winner of the cup. At that time Eric and Kath were members of the then thriving Menai Bridge Bowling Club, before later moving to play for the Benllech Bowling Club and finally moving to play for the Beaumaris Bowling Club. Over the time I personally knew them, they became a prominent and respected couple around all our bowling greens. No doubt the loss of Eric last year has been a heavy burden for Kath to bear, as so many of their interests, whether it be playing bowls, playing whist or walking the Welsh countryside were always done together.

So it is with a heavy heart that I personally must wish Kath all the very best for the future as she returns to her homeland of Chesterfield to be nearer family and friends. Hopefully one day she will return to Happy Valley to have a good old chin wag and catch up with her old bowling friends.

Before I finish it would be remiss of me not to thank her, on behalf of the club for the playing commitments she has made to the Beaumaris Bowling Club over the last number of years, and also to her son John who on a number of occasions last year travelled home from Leeds to play for the Saturday B team.

So Kath and John can I on behalf of everyone at Beaumaris Bowling Club thank you and wish you both all the very best for the future.

Fondest Best Wishes

David Mathias Secretary for Beaumaris Bowling Club
